Community & Immunity

People have been asking if there’s anything specific I’m doing to increase Immunity. With my blood condition, it means I may be possibly more susceptible to virus’s and the common cold and things floating around, but there’s nothing I’m doing that everyone else cant do.

First and foremost it’s looking after our nervous system and adrenals. When the body is in a stress response or fear state, the body needs to work twice as hard to keep up. The whole immune response is under stress when we are under stress. A few simple things you can do in this strange and challenging time to support your nervous system and move from a more grounded, centred and uplifted place of being.

Movement - Now more than ever it’s important to call upon our physical practice. Take time to nourish, strengthen and sustain our physical bodies. Whether it’s yoga, gentle exercise or going for a run. Every experience we have is stored in the physical body so we want to keep things moving. Stagnation in the body causes decreases to circulation and natural repair functions. So keep moving the body - it is a gift! Our greatest blessing and instrument.

Meditation & Pranayama - Turn the awareness inward. With so much happening in the outer world, we want to turn our air attention inward and feel our inner connectedness.  Take some to sit.  A good 10-20 minutes.  Also a gentle Nadi Shodana (alternate nostril breathing) pacifying, clearing and purifying our airways and our energy body.  (I will include some simple pranayama practices in my online classes).

Take refuge in mother nature.  We’re so lucky in Australia having access to natures abundance and gifts of the natural world. If you’re not in self iso, there’s no better time to take a solo swim in the ocean, sit in nature, go for a bush walk. We’re not separate from nature. We are a part of it. Good for perspective. Good for everything.

Prioritise Sleep.  During sleep your body works to reset the system, repairing tissues and cells and reducing any inflammation.  Try and sleep with natures rhythms. Bed by 10pm and wake if you can when the sun rises. Rest if you feel tired. Daytime naps are king.

Eat Well. Nutrient rich, whole-foods. Natural foods with loads of colour and rich in vitamin C, Zinc, magnesium. Incorporate lemon, ginger, turmeric, garlic - loads of green leafy vege. Warm nourishing foods. Stay hydrated, plenty of filtered water and sip warm tea throughout the day. Fresh Coriander seed tea is great for reducing inflammation as well as turmeric, ginger and garlic. Cold shower therapy.

A little bit of Whim Hoffing.  So good for your physical body. 30 seconds and gradually move up to 3 minutes. Look into WH method for breathing techniques.

Get your lovely face out of the house and intro some sunshine. Try hard not to get bogged down in things that make you feel heavy and negative. Whether on social media, news articles, friends’s opinions…Remaining as positive, spacious and light as possible is so important in times of collective upheaval and general strangeness.

The last piece of good news is that ultimately our bodies are filled with innate recourses and wisdom for healing and wellbeing.  The body knows what to do to promote healing and vitality if we let it. We just need to tap into the practices that allow us to be. Wishing you all wellness and peace.

With love, Sophie ❍
